StarHub regains rights for ESPN Star Sports

SINGAPORE - StarHub has regained the broadcasting rights for ESPN Star Sports’ (ESS) bouquet of channels and multimedia packages.

The pay-TV operator lost the rights for ESS in 2009 when SingTel bagged an exclusive three-year deal.

The new deal will see both StarHub and SingTel feature ESS channels, including ESPN, Star Sports, ESPN HD, ESPNEWS, Star Cricket, and Star Cricket HD.

The move is expected to help StarHub defend its declining market share in Singapore. In the third quarter, the company said that about 1.2 per cent of its pay-TV subscribers had switched operators.

As part of this, the company is offering ESPNEWS as a complimentary channel. However, the channel has increased prices for the Sports Group from $12.84 to $19.26.

At the moment, StarHub continues to lead the market with 541,000 subscribers, versus SingTel’s 380,000.

It comes as ESPN Star Sports announced that it has secured expanded coverage for its multi-platform networks in Singapore.
 
It has secured a new carriage arrangement with StarHub on a non-exclusive basis for its various services including sports channels ESPN, STAR Sports, ESPN HD, ESPNEWS, STAR Cricket and STAR Cricket HD along with broadband and mobile services via ESPN Player and Mobile ESPN respectively.
 
StarHub will begin the transmission of ESS television networks and ESPN Player from December 14t and will launch the Mobile ESPN service later this month.
 
ESS has also renewed its carriage arrangement with SingTel on a non-exclusive basis through a multi-year deal for all its services across television, broadband and mobile platforms.
