The State of the Internet is a quarterly report. South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong dominate most measures within the report on a regional level, and some on a global level.

South Korea rank first with the fastest internet connection speed in the world, and Hong Kong being second and Japan third. Mason in South Korea and Usen in Japan are the two cities with the strongest internet speed.

South Korea and Japan also took the first two spots with the highest broadband connectivity in terms of speed distribution in the world. Hong Kong ranks fourth.

For security issues, Asia Pacific is the second biggest region that encounters internet attack traffic (31 per cent) after Europe (44 per cent).

China holds the third place (9 per cent) as the most attacked country following Russia (12 per cent) and United States (10 per cent). Taiwan (6 per cent) is fifth and Japan (2.9 per cent) is ninth.

China jumps 30 per cent in a year-on-year change in the top ten list of unique IP addresses in internet penetration. It registers 58 million unique IP addresses in Q1 this year, making it number three on the list. Japan follows with 33 million and South Korea with 17 million.

Still, the report states emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and South America will be the main driver of global broadband growth in the next five years.

Akamai Technologies, a cloud optimisation services company, provides quarterly reports on internet statistics. Topics include attack traffic, broadband adoption and mobile connectivity.
