Astro TV launches portal for international sport

KUALA LUMPUR - Digital Five, the digital arm of TV operator Astro, has launched Stadiumastro.com and m.stadiumastro.com, Malaysia's first sports portal delivering International and local sports news to Malaysians via the internet and WAP mobile.

The online and mobile sports offering complements Astro’s offering of international, Asian and local sporting events. The key products on Astro TV include English Premier League, Formula One, Wimbledon and US Open tennis, Augusta Masters and the Rugby World Cup.

The portal will target 18- to 35-year-old males and allows fans to subscribe to their favourite sports news and scores, which is delivered directly to their mobile phones. A forum section is among the other user-centric features on Stadiumastro.com, which aims to cultivate a sports community within the country.

Victor William, head of sports, Digital Five said : “We noticed a gap in the Malaysian market and are extremely proud and excited to be Malaysia’s first premium sports offering web and WAP giving Malaysian’s sports fans their very own homegrown platform covering all their favourite sports.”

Currently the site’s content focuses on international sports, but there are plans to cover various local sports events like badminton and golf.

Apart from online ads, TV ads are running on its Astro Channel. In conjunction with the new English Premier League (EPL) season, Stadiumastro.com is introducing Stadiumastro Fantasy, a fantasy football game based on the EPL.

Astro recently tied with FourFourTwo magazine to launch a sports show.
