New convention centre to open in Sydney

The Infinity Convention Centre will open this September as part of a A$575 million (US$412 million) mixed-use development by Crown Group in Sydney’s inner-south. The 20-storey Infinity tower will also include a 90-room hotel opening in July and 326 luxury apartments, as well as a new dining and retail hub.

The surrounding Green Square precinct is undergoing a A$13 billion (US$9.3 billion) transformation that includes a new train station, library and aquatic centre.

Event spaces at Infinity Convention Centre will include classroom-style space for up to 65 people, cocktail receptions for 450 people, banquets for 370 people, and auditorium events for 430 people. The site will also have kitchen facilities to cater for large-scale functions.

Crown Group’s director of hotels and suites, Wayne Taranto, said the venue would set a new benchmark for events in Sydney, with “beautiful interiors” equipped with “ergonomic equipment and technology”.

“The new Infinity Convention Centre will provide a much-needed new space for sophisticated conferences, business functions and parties, in the heart of Sydney’s newest residential and commercial precinct, Green Square,” he said.

“It will attract the best events from around the world, with event managers drawn to this exciting, attractive new space, made more appealing because of its ease of access, with the airport and city so close by and the added bonus of having more than 20 new retail stores, cafes and restaurants nearby.”

The new dining and retail precinct is opening mid-year and will include all-day dining along an Asian “eat street” including outdoor terrace table service. This will be anchored by Makoto Japanese, a sit-down sashimi and bento restaurant by Masuya; and Bashan, serving Chinese soup noodle dishes, with noodles handmade on-site and cooked to order.

Butcher and the Farmer will also open a Green Square branch following on from its success at Tramsheds, Forest Lodge. Delegates will be able to get their morning latte at Social Society by Gabriel Coffee, by Sydney “coffee king” and former barista champion Sam Gabrielian. There will also be a medical centre, hairdresser and dry cleaner.

Crown Group COO of development, hotel and retail, Pierre Abrahamse, said: “This will create a vibrant cultural hub at the heart of Green Square. It will have everything you need in the one place, plus the benefit of direct access to Green Square train station, being just one stop from the city.”
