Telkomsel awards US$25 million outdoor media account to MEC in Indonesia
Outdoor advertising is thought to be a significant component of the telco’s marketing activities in Indonesia. Telkomsel’s outdoor business, estimated to be between $25-30 million by industry figures, was previously handled in-house by its marketing and procurement departments.

This is the first time Telkomsel has appointed an external partner and the appointment is effective immediately.

MEC had previously won the leading mobile operator’s mainline media planning and buying from Initiative in Indonesia last May following a competitive review.

On the appointment, Tavadi Rismayuda, general manager of Telkomsel, said: “Following a rigorous internal process, we decided that in order to maintain our leading market position, strategic media integration and efficiencies were key. MEC have been a genuine business partner since we started working with them last year and we look forward to a great relationship ahead.”

Jaydeep Chaudhuri, head of MEC Indonesia, added: “We are proud to have demonstrated to Telkomsel that integrated planning and buying across all channels is without question the most effective way to actively engage consumers. I am delighted for all the MEC team, we begin the year with great momentum.”

According to market research, Indonesia is expected to have 239 million mobile subscribers by 2014 with Telkomsel taking a market share of 53.6 per cent.

Separately, Wrigley recently appointed MEC as its media agency-of-record in Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, following a review.
