The local version of Groupon was the champion of search results in Google Zeitgeist from January to June 2011, outstripping other group buying sites in the region.

Groupbuya was ranked fourth in the top ten brands, and Group Buyer followed closely in the fifth place.

Google Zeitgeist, a tool designed to provide insight into internet trends, is compiled based on the aggregation of billions of search queries typed into the search engine.

In the consumer electronics category, the smartphone and tablet PC booms heated up searches related to Apple's iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy series of gadgets.

In addition, mobile phone operators also appeared frequently in Google searches, with SmarTone Vodafone and PCCW Mobile in the list's top ten.

Fast-food chain McDonald enjoyed a lot of publicity as internet users googled for its take-away service and online menu, prompting it to take the ninth position.

As for the broader list of the most popular search terms, Facebook is on top. Other web giants such as Google, Yahoo!, and YouTube were well-received online.

Other notable search keywords were China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Panasonic, TVB, and HSBC.
