Photos: Sydney Opera House debuts new event space

The space – which has direct access to the Northern Boardwalk – can fit up to 400 people standing or 180 seated.

The iconic Sydney Opera House opened doors to its newly redesigned function and events centre which marks the completion of a major project in its AU$273mil (US$195mil) renewal program. The new Yallamundi Rooms will be available for community celebrations, intimate gatherings, private events and small-scale performances.

The space – which has direct access to the Northern Boardwalk – can fit up to 400 people standing or 180 seated, with several room configurations available. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the Sydney Harbour. The new rooms have been integrated within the building envelope by architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, who also conceived the 2015 fit-out of the Opera House’s award-winning Bennelong restaurant.

The new venue will be managed by operator Trippas White Group and their ambassador chef, Karen Martini. Martini will bring a new vision to the Opera House’s dining offerings, drawing on her family influences and Tunisian-Italian heritage. “We are sourcing incredible produce from all around the country to create dishes that emulate the visual beauty of the Australian outback,” said Martini.

The renewal program also includes a revamp of the Concert Hall, due to begin in February 2020. This will prepare the iconic performing arts centre for new capabilities.
