Bruising beer-bar brawl narrowly averted in New Zealand

Trouble is brewing between two suspiciously similar gangs of guys, until a new brew from DB Breweries saves the day.

In a new commercial by Colenso BBDO for DB Breweries, things get downright nasty between a group of lager fans and a strangely similar rival group that prefers a more hoppy flavour. Luckily, a wise bartender leaps into action before anything more hurtful than cutting words about haircuts and shoes can be exchanged, and introduces a new brew both gangs agree on.

The work has somewhat less lofty goals than the brand's many-award-winning 'Brewtroleum' campaign, which involved a biofuel made from brewing byproducts and told guys they could save the planet by drinking the beer.

This won't win as many awards, but it's effective nonetheless, because it makes a little fun of how seriously some guys take their beer, while also smoothly delivering the new brew's proposition.

Fun as it is, this ad doesn't displace Ad Nut's all time favourite ad for an alcoholic beverage—all-time favourite ad of any kind, actually—which you can find atop Ad Nut's Advertising Hall of Fame.
