Leading the crisis management team in FD, Chan will work closely with the Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe offices to offer consultation on government economic policies and media relations for China and Hong Kong.

Chan said: “As information moves ever -aster across timezones, the challenges in crisis management have grown exponentially.”

Chan added humourously: “One of the greatest challenges is switching sides and being on the receiving end of journalist's questions!”

Diana Footitt, managing director and CEO of Asia at FD said: “Elaine is our fourth senior journalist hire in the region, joining the heads of our Shanghai and Singapore offices and one of our co-heads in Beijing.” Chan will report to Footitt, COO of Asia Alastair Hetherington and managing director of Hong Kong and China Wendy Yeung.

She added that Chan’s move is part of FD’s talent expansion to build a stronger presence in the China and Hong Kong.

Chan has been with the SCMP for the past six years. Apart from overseeing the business and China sections of the publication, she also launched a weekly Inside China feature and monthly supplement titled China Business. Chan also spent five years at Bloomberg as Shanghai bureau chief.

FD is headquartered in Hong Kong, but has been aggressively expanding in Asia-Pacific for the past two years opening offices and acquiring networks in Singapore, Australia and South Korea.
