MUMBAI – JWT has acquired a majority stake in Hungama Digital Services, a leading digital agency in India.

Harris: digital "next new frontier" in India

Hungama Digital Services is the digital promotions and marketing unit of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment. It will be renamed JWT Hungama Digital Services. Responsibility for the agency will continue to fall under the current leadership, with a reporting line to JWT India digital head Max Hegerman. Colvyn Harris (pictured), chief executive of JWT India, said the arrangement was desinged to "ensure a smooth transition and appropriate client engagement".

In a statement, Neeraj Roy, chief executive and managing director of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment, noted that India was “on the cusp of a digital revolution” and that the partnership would take advantage of this by offering “integrated digital and experiential services and prepare brands to connect, interact and now transact with their customers”.

Harris added that clients in India do not currently have "a high end digital option". He said the partnership was aimed at clients "who have digital as a strategic mandate to build their own brand and customer engagement"  and that JWT would develop the immediate, mid and long-term strategic framework alongside Hungama.

Hungama Digital Services has been active for the past 13 years and operates across six cities, with a staff of 120. It offers strategic planning, digital and social media marketing, mobile marketing, web design, activation, merchandising and events.

JWT is looking to strengthen its digital presence in emerging markets. Last year, JWT subsidiary XM Asia acquired Magnivate, a leading digital agency in Indonesia.
