Pedigree makes selfie app and filters for dogs

Pedigree takes after Snapchat to create dog filters in a new app launch.

Pedigree makes selfie app and filters for dogs

If dogs could speak, Ad Nut wonders what they would say about seeing themselves with cat ears, even if it was just digitally.

Cat ears are indeed one of Snapchat-like 'lenses' in Pedigree's new SelfieStix app, which helps dog onwers take selfies with their fine furry friends. The app works with, and is a logical followup to, the SelfieStix phone clip. Introduced last year in Australia and New Zealand, the clip holds one of the company's DentaStix treats, thus attracting said doggo's eyes to a spot near the phone's selfie lens.

Available on iOS and Android, the app is said to use canine facial recognition technology and machine learning to track the canine visage. The app features aviator sunglasses, among other filters that humans think are cute, and the brand said more filters will appear later, including for Valentine's Day and Easter.

Clever and fun stuff, to be sure. But Ad Nut suggests that the creative team at Colenso BBDO check out the portfolio of pet photographer Grace Chon, who took entertaining photos of her dog dressed identitically to her offspring, no filters needed.

Ad Nut can think of some other woodland creatures that would be more willing participants than any murderous beasts, no tricks needed.
