2013 in review: Top Asian brand world-record beaters in 2013

ASIA-PACIFIC – The region has a reputation for practicality, reserve and a tendency towards seriousness. Frivolity often gets frowned upon. But this collection of Guinness Records, which brands in Asia broke in 2013, may make you re-think that reticent repute.

2013 in review: Top Asian brand world-record beaters in 2013

Perhaps it's the Asian love of topping the rankings that leads companies in the region to set new and unusual records.

While the achievements are largely lighthearted, sometimes even silly, one thing's for sure: The resulting press attention brings brands real recognition.

5. Back in February, Guinness beer in Singapore set a Guinness World Record for the ’longest bar slide’ to mark the launch of its new Guinness Draught in a Bottle.

4. In March, as part of the global Earth Hour 2013 Challenge, the Pudong Shangri-La in East Shanghai broke a Guinness World Record when it gathered 508 staff to simultaneously blow out candles.

3. In August, 2,132 Sige Moms, a Filipino term for mothers who encourage kids to always try new things, gathered together, in conjunction with the Breeze brand laundry detergent, at the University of Makati to take part in breaking a Guinness World Record for the Philippines. They simultaneously hand-washed a record-shattering 1,200 metre-long stretch of fabric, exceeding the old achievement by three times.

2. In April, Resorts World Sentosa's S.E.A. Aquarium became the official record holder of two Guinness World Records - it is the world's largest aquarium and also has the world's largest single acrylic panel as part of its Ocean Gallery.

1. In April, Hong Kong’s Times Square mall and Fun Entertainment organised the “Miss you much Leslie” exhibition. It highlighted the late Hong Kong superstar Leslie Cheung’s music, stage performances and films. His local and global fans joined forces to fold 1,900,119 paper cranes, breaking the World Record for the world’s largest paper crane exhibition.
