McCann Worldgroup appoints new Greater China CMO

SHANGHAI - John Jay Steere, most recently Asia-Pacific CEO for Saatchi & Saatchi X based in Guangzhou, has joined McCann Worldgroup in the newly created role of chief marketing officer.

Steere will be based in Shanghai and report directly to TH Peng. He will lead marketing and communications strategies as well as business development by collaborating with the agency’s leadership in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. He will also develop cross-discipline teams within McCann Worldgroup Greater China that can address business development opportunities.

“John has the right skills and experience for this important position,” said Peng. “Steere's combination of leadership roles in PR, digital and ATL/ BTL agencies, coupled with working on the client side and starting/ selling his own agencies, makes him uniquely qualified for this appointment.”

At Saatchi & Saatchi X based in Guangzhou, Steere was responsible for scaling and integrating the operations in China as well as developing business throughout Asia. He doubled revenue in less than two years.

Prior to Saatchi & Saatchi X, Steere was Asia-Pacific managing director for Anthem Asia, he also founded his own agency in Singapore and Thailand providing clients (Unilever, 7Eleven and Mastercard) with strategic BTL, activation, media and shopper marketing services.

In addition to his agency background, Steere held senior management, marketing and business development roles with Gartner, Network Commerce and AT&T. He was regional marketing head for Visa International, where he led and developed all marketing and communications for SE Asia and India covering more than 15 countries.

Steere is American/ Chinese and was born in Vietnam, educated in Taiwan and the US, and speaks fluent Mandarin.
