Nokia Malaysia sets world record with Angry Birds relay

KUALA LUMPUR - On Saturday (11 June) Nokia and Malaysian fans of the Angry Birds game by Rovio, set the Guinness World Record for 'most people in a mobile phone game relay' with 2,030 players.

The event was organised to raise brand awareness in line with Nokia's tagline of 'connecting people', and featured an Angry Birds playground at Malaysia's largest IT-Mall, Low Yat Plaza.

Starting at 11am, the game was played on a single Nokia N8 and to be counted in, players had to either complete a level or survive for a minute. When the organisers called time at the event at 9pm, there was still a long queue of willing players.

According to the rules set out by Guinness World Records, at least 1,000 players had to participate for the event to set a new world record.

Oddly enough, several participants have noted via social media that Nokia's brand seemed dwarfed by the appeal of Angry Birds and even Low Yat Plaza, with the latter trending higher on Twitter, rather than Nokia.

Commenting on this, one blogger noted, "I really don’t know what is the main objective of the event."

Angry Birds however does seem to be a popular marketing theme if this T-Mobile event at Barcelona is anything to go by. The telecommunciations network created a live Angry Birds game complete with exploding pigs and birds shedding feathers. Users used a phone to launch the birds but enjoyed the spectacle in real life.
