Electrolux to launch Washing-thon in Singapore

SINGAPORE - Home appliances manufacturer Electrolux has unveiled the first charity clothes washing marathon in Singapore, entitled Washing-thon, to help deserving causes in Southeast Asia.

Electrolux to launch Washing-thon in Singapore

The event takes place from 13 to 15 June and aims to recyle clothes to make them wanted and loved again. Washing machines and tumble dryers will be on repeat cycles at Toa Payoh as Electrolux aims to launder a record-breaking amount of donated clothes.

Working with charity partners such as MINDs and Blessings in a Bag, the clothing laundered at the Washing-thon event will be given away for deserving causes in Singapore, Cambodia and Laos.

The Electrolux Washing-thon is a core component of the company’s CSR programme in Southeast Asia, which comes to Singapore after events in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Koh Soh Hoie, GM at Electrolux Singapore & Malaysia, said the event tagline is “Fostering a caring and gracious community”, which reflects its commitment to “creating an event where everyone involved feels they are making a positive difference especially to those in need across the region”.

The event in Singapore is supported by the Toa Payoh Central Community Club and Toa Payoh Central Zone 2 Residents’ Committee.

A clothing collection drive has already started, with public donation points at Toa Payoh Community Centre and The Grandstand. Local schools and corporates are also helping to collect clothing ahead of the Washing-thon.

While the washing takes place, a variety of activities and entertainment will be provided, such as balloon sculpting, musical entertainment and performances. The event aims to bring the community together in a positive and engaging environment.

Emily Teng, founder of Blessings in a Bag, noted that clothing is an often overlooked basic need of every human being, which is just as important as food, water or shelter.

“Through donated clothing we can make a great difference to the lives of those we help in Southeast Asia,” she said. “Electrolux shares our vision to bring Singapore together in helping deserving causes and has been a truly supportive partner and believer in Blessings in a Bag’s vision.”

Consumers are encouraged to share images of their Washing-thon donations on Instagram #washingthon. The 10 pictures with the most ‘likes’ by 15 June will receive an Electrolux steam iron.
