Igniting the spark: A how-to-guide for finding inspiration in project ideation, while embracing your identity

Here’s how one native designer brings her full self to her creative work — and how you can, too.

Igniting the spark: A how-to-guide for finding inspiration in project ideation, while embracing your identity

Every creative project begins with a spark—a flash of insight that ignites the imagination and sets the wheels in motion. As a designer, I’m always working to unearth inspiration and fuel my creative fire, especially during those crucial project ideation phases. My approach uses a dynamic blend of exploration, introspection, and connection, which enables me (and also, you) to tap into a wellspring of ideas and even lean into cultural stories to infuse your projects with authenticity and meaning. I find inspiration by looking inward at myself, outward at the world, and by reflecting on the past while looking towards the future.

First off, look back to unearth the past

Delve into the rich landscape of history and culture. Immerse yourself in books, archives and stories that resonate with your project's theme. Explore the historical context, the social movements, and the cultural nuances that have shaped the world we live in.

Do your due diligence. Don’t guess at what happened-find out. These voices from our collective past offer a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, providing a solid foundation for your creative exploration. Hear them, interpret them, then honor them.

Current obsessions: The People’s Graphic Design ArchiveWe Are Dancing for You: Cutcha Risling Baldy, and local library archives

Next, look forward to embrace the present

In other words, engage with the vibrant energy of the contemporary world. Explore current trends in design, art, fashion, architecture and technology. Immerse yourself. Listen to podcasts, watch films and attend exhibitions that spark your curiosity. Get out there and “do” and “sense.”

By staying connected to the pulse of the present, you'll ensure your ideas are relevant, fresh and engaging—and also, informed.

Then look in and explore your inner landscape

Turn inwards and explore the rich terrain of your own experiences, from birth to childhood to your current life. Reflect on your memories, revisit cherished stories and connect with your own cultural heritage.

We are shaped by our past, by every triumph and every struggle we've experienced. These personal narratives are a treasure trove of authentic inspiration, allowing you to infuse your projects with emotional depth and perspectives that are distinctly yours. My suggestion? Keep a personal archive—a collection of photographs, journals and objects that hold meaning for you. Keep them close to hand and in view of your every day; don’t bury them in some closet or attic. These tangible reminders of your experiences can spark reimaginations and ideas and reignite your creative flame when you need it most.

Current obsessions: Journaling, collecting vinyl, and old-fashioned oral storytelling surrounded by loved ones

Look out by connecting with your community

Engage with the world around you. Explore the natural landscapes that inspire you, attend community events and cultivate meaningful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds — proactively. These interactions will broaden your horizons, expose you to new perspectives, and deepen your understanding of the human experience.

By fostering genuine connections with people, you'll gain valuable insights that will inform your creative process.

Current obsessions: Artist markets, local theaters like Su Teatro, and New Mexico cloud formations

Lastly: Stay open to fueling your fire

  • Let curiosity be your guide. Follow your interests, explore new avenues, and ask questions. The more you explore, the more you'll discover.
  • Trust your instincts and believe in your ideas, even when they seem unconventional. Don't be afraid to challenge the status quo and explore uncharted territory.
  • Find the “human” in every connection. Look for the emotional core of your project. Connect with the human story behind the brief and infuse your work with authenticity and empathy.
  • Champion diversity. Embrace diverse perspectives and create space for unique voices. By fostering inclusivity, you'll enrich the creative landscape and generate more impactful ideas.

This multifaceted approach to finding inspiration is like building a fire. You start with a spark—an initial idea or concept. Then, you gather kindling—historical context, contemporary influences, personal experiences, and community connections. By carefully layering these elements and fanning the flames, you'll generate a wealth of ideas that will fuel your project ideation and bring your ideas to life.
