Sydney agency behind world-record fly-by-night video banner

Sydney-based Branding By Air developed a massive video banner that flew over New York City for MTV.

Sydney-based Branding By Air worked for three years on a flying video banner, which flew over New York City last week to promote MTV's Video Music Awards show.

The stunt required two helicopters: one towing a 76-meter-wide screen and the other using powerful projectors to paint that screen with moving images. The special sauce in the technology is the ability to keep the image locked onto the screen, which requires not only targeting but also scaling the video on the fly as the distance between the two airships inevitably varies. The company says the setup provides "high-definition" viewing over 8 kilometers, and the stunt, which took place last week, will be certified by the Guinness Book of Records.

Wired has more details on the banner and also produced the video above.
