Mentos has introduced a new twist on its iconic cola and Mentos experiment with the launch of the "Mentos Fizzooka", a custom rocket launcher designed for video game Fortnite Creative.
The campaign, created by BBH London, features a giant Mentos roll attached to a cola bottle and will be available in several popular Fortnite Creative maps, including "Piece Control 2v2", "Piece Control 1v1", "Troll Bed Wars", and "Sky Wars".
The Mentos Fizzooka will be available in these Fortnite Creative maps for the next two weeks, reaching an audience of more than a million players per day.
BBH and gaming specialist Metavision worked closely with map creators to ensure the launcher is both fun and tactically effective for players. The Fizzooka can launch opponents across the map and is the only weapon in Fortnite that can destroy player builds with a single shot
Hugues Leydier, senior global brand communications and activation manager at Mentos, said: “Mentos is all about refreshing the everyday, so what could be better than refreshing the original Mentos and cola experiment and shaking up the world of gaming at the same time?”
This is the first time the Mentos and cola experiment has been featured in a gaming platform, and is the first branded tactical item released in Fortnite Creative.
The creatives on the campaign were executive creative director Felipe Guimaraes and creative directors Stu Royall and Phil Holbrook.
Royall said: “For years the world’s greatest amateur scientists have been experimenting with the most formidable force known to humankind: Mentos and cola. But beyond blowing up bottles in their back gardens, no one has been able to harness its awesome potential… until now.”
The copywriter and the art director were Lawrence Bushell and Luke Till respectively.
In addition to the in-game version, Mentos collaborated with YouTube creators The Hacksmith to create a real-life Mentos Fizzooka, which can shoot a soda geyser with the force of a firehose. A limited number of 30 replica Fizzookas have been sent to global influencers for controlled testing.
The Mentos x cola experiment, which gained popularity in 1999, continues to thrive across social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok.
Media planning and buying for the campaign was handled by Wavemaker Global.
